STUDENT SERVICES AND REGULATIONS A - Z

Plagiarism

The School views any action of a student who acts dishonestly or improperly in relation to their course work as plagiarism. Deliberate plagiarism is regarded as an act of serious misconduct.

1. Plagiarism is defined as any one of the following:
1.1 Word for word copying of sentences or whole paragraphs from one or more sources (the work or data of other persons) or presenting of substantial extracts from books, articles, theses, other unpublished work such as working papers, seminar and conference papers, internal reports, computer software, lecture notes or tapes without clearly indicating their origin.
1.2 Using very close paraphrasing of sentences or whole paragraphs without due acknowledgement in the form of reference to the original work.
1.3 Submitting another student's work in whole or in part as your own work.
1.4 Use of another person's ideas, work or research data without acknowledgement.
1.5 Submitting work which has been written by someone else on your behalf.

2. Penalties
2.1 A student found guilty of plagiarism by the Lecturer is to be immediately deemed not competent for the work submitted. The student is required to book a re-assessment and re-submit all work for that subject.
2.2 Where it is suspected that the case has involved deliberate plagiarism, the Lecturer concerned shall consult with the Head of Department. In this case a student found guilty of deliberate plagiarism is to be immediately deemed not competent and the student will be required to re-enroll into that subject in the following teaching period.
2.3 If the student demonstrates deliberate plagiarism on more than one occasion, a formal inquiry will be conducted by the Head of Department. The Head of Department in their absolute discretion will determine the course of action however the maximum penalty imposed will be discontinuance from the course of study or expulsion from the school. The student will be invited to attend the inquiry and respond to the findings.

3. Student Responsibility
3.1 It is the responsibility of all students to safeguard against plagiarism their written work and assignments, their computer discs and their notes. Students should not under any circumstances give other students access to assessment work or notes and students who intentionally do so may be penalised in the same way that students found guilty of plagiarism are penalised.
3.2 Any student who has reason to believe that his or her work has been plagiarised or copied should immediately report the matter to their relevant Head of Department.

Note: In order to safeguard student work as best as possible the required referencing system for all student work is the Harvard Referencing System.
