In Service Placement (Hospitality/Tourism/Events courses)

For Degree Students only

Intern Study Placement (Hospitality/Tourism/Events courses)

Intern Study I-IV are taken in the final semester (usually semester six (6)) as a block placement. All internship placements must be approved by the Internship Co-ordinator.

The school understands the importance of integrating students study with real world experience and places a high value on the work placement component of all education. Students undertaking an undergraduate degree with Southern Cross University must complete six hundred (600) hours of work placement throughout Intern Study I-IV. Internship placements are conducted throughout all areas of the industry, including hospitality services, tourism operations, marketing, human resources, finance and accounting, conferences and events management, tourism planning and research.

Prior to commencement of the Intern Study placement, you are required to satisfy certain criteria to ensure they meet minimum industry standards. The criteria upon which you are assessed is as follows:
1) Have successfully completed all the twenty (20) units of theoretical as well as practical skills training including the interpersonal skills training conducted in the MNG10476 Professional Development for the Work placement unit
2) Have a satisfactory attendance and punctuality record for the past semesters
3) Have submitted a current, industry standard resume to the Internship Co-ordinator
4) Have completed a satisfactory interview assessment with the Internship Co-ordinator

Once you have met all of the qualifying criteria, the Internship Co-ordinator will arrange an interview with a suitably identified host establishment. The "Intern Study Placement" should commence in Semester six (6) in accordance with the Australian Government regulations a formal agreement must be signed between the School and your Host establishment which sets out the terms and conditions of your “Intern Study Placement

Students are not permitted to change their arranged “Intern Study Placement” under any circumstances. Students who fail to attend their “Intern Study Placement” will be in breach of their Student visa requirements and will be reported to DIAC.

Important Note
If you do not meet the requirements of the “Intern Study Placement” you will fail to the 4 (four) units resulting in you not meeting course requirements and therefore, you will be unable to complete your final qualification.

For Diploma Students only

Work placement (Hospitality and Tourism courses)

Part of the Diploma of Hospitality and Diploma of Tourism courses require the students to work in a commercial industry environment working in the customer service area/s. The students are required to show the evidence of their working for at least thirty six (36) shifts. This forms part of evidence gathering process for the DIP0007 Hospitality Services Management subject as part of this subject requires the lecturers to make an overall judgement regarding your customer service skills achieved by working in the industry.

Work placement (Events course)

Part of the Diploma of Events course requires the students to work in a commercial industry environment working in the event management area/s. The students are required to show the evidence of their working in the event management organisations which forms part of evidence gathering process for the DIP0010 Conventions, Meetings and Exhibitions Management subject as part of this subject requires the lecturers to make an overall judgement regarding your event management skills achieved by working in the industry.

Important note:
If you do not meet the requirements of the work placment, you will be deemed as Not Yet Competent for the subject and therefore will result in you not meeting the Course requirements.
