Policy Mission
To ensure that all vocational courses offered at the Australian School of Tourism and Hotel management provide students with transparent, fair and equitable opportunities for re-assessment where this is necessary and that the policy ensures the collection of reliable and valid evidence consistent with AQF, AQTF and the Nationally endorsed Hospitality, Business Services and the Financial Services Training Package. The school has an assessment policy which allows the student two attempts (original assessment and ONE further re-assessment opportunity) to provide adequate evidence of competency for each subject. Policy Outline The Re-assessment policy outlines the rules relating to re-assessment opportunities as they are applied to all students. It is important to read this policy in conjunction with the re-assessment dates as they are published from time to time at: http://www.asthm.edu.au/student_services/dates.php.
Policy Procedure 1 RE-ASSESSMENT RULES
After a student has been notified of his/her assessment outcome, and where the result the student has achieved has been deemed by the assessor as - NS (Not Satisfactory) the student is provided one further opportunity to undertake a re-assessment in order to achieve the required outcome sought by the assessment item of - S (Satisfactory) result, providing the re-assessment is conducted in accordance with this policy. The rules for re-assessment are as follows:
1.1 It is the student's responsibility to formally apply for all re-assessments. The student must submit completed RE-ASSESSMENT APPLICATION(GA028) to Student Services within 7 days from the marking date published online (www.asthm.edu.au > login> My Enrolment > My Result). The lecturer is not responsible for ensuring that students comply with their responsibility. Once the student submits the application, the student may also be required to attend free extra tuition as part of early intervention. The requirements for extra tuition will be published online under "My Enrolment". This particular student must attend extra tuition in order to meet the course progression requirements and satisfactorily progress from semester to semester. It is the student's responsibility to contact Student Services to confirm the details of extra tuition. 1.2 Where a "FINAL OUTCOME" result has been published the student is no longer eligible for re-assessment under this policy. Final Outcome = either past the 7 days or already had the re-assessment. 1.3 The Application for Re-assessment will be considered within the rules of re-assessment by the Head of Department. The Head of Department will make a decision based on the Application and determine one of the following two decisions: 1.3.1 Re-assessment application "APPROVED" as meeting the re-assessment rules. i. All "APPROVED" re-assessments attract a "RE-ASSESSMENT FEE" per re-assessment to cover the cost of materials, ingredients, consumables, administration and marking. PD re-assessments for Cookery and Patisserie = $100.00 All other re-assessments = $50.00 The student must keep the receipt as evidence upon submission. ii. e-assessments that are not submitted with the "APPROVED RE-ASSESSMENT COVER SHEET" will not be accepted under any circumstances. iii. All "APPROVED" re-assessments to be undertaken by the student must be completed and submitted to the relevant head of department by the "RE-ASSESSMENT SUBMISSION DAY" as determined by the Head of Department and will be published on line under "My Enrolment". 1.3.2 "RE-ASSESSMENT DECLINED" as not meeting the re-assessment rules. i. Where a "FINAL OUTCOME" result is published a student may no longer apply for a re-assessment under the rules of Re-assessment. ii. After submitting a "RE-ASSESSMENT APPLICATION" which was declined as not meeting the Re-Assessment rules, such as with plagiarism, the student will be informed of this decision in writing and the standing result will become the Final Result for that assessment item. Invoice and payment will be credited. iii. A final standing result of "NOT SATISFACTORY" will also determine the entire subject as "NOT COMPETENT" and the student will be required to re-enrol in that subject at the next available date. iv. Where a student has undertaken an "APPROVED" re-assessment and has been deemed as meeting the re-assessment criteria a final result of "SATISFACTORY" will be provided and the student record will be updated to reflect the re-assessment outcome. v. Where a student has undertaken an Approved re-assessment and has been deemed as not meeting the re-assessment criteria a final outcome result of "NOT SATISFACTORY" will be provided and the student record will be updated to reflect the re-assessment outcome. In this instance the student will be required to re-enrol in that subject at the next available date. vi. Failure to complete and submit ALL Approved re-assessments by the close of business of the APPROVED RE-ASSESSMENT SUBMISSION DATE will also render the student as not meeting the assessment criteria. In this instance a result of "NOT SATISFACTORY" will be issued against the re-assessment for that subject and will be required to re-enrol in the subject at the next available date.
2 Extraordinary Assessments or Extensions to Assessments In the event a student considers they have a valid reason for being unable to complete an assessment or re-assessment by the due date they may request an Extension of Assessment directly with their Head of Department by completing the "ASSIGNMENT EXTENSION REQUEST" (QA H005). "ASSIGNMENT EXTENSION REQUEST" must be made prior to the original assessment due date or in the case of extraordinary circumstances, the student's first day back to school. The Extension of an Assessment Request must provide clear reasons that can be substantiated with evidence of the circumstances claimed on the form. Valid reasons that will be considered include: 1.Medical reasons - Medical certificates must be supplied. 2.Bereavement - A letter and evidence must be supplied. The decision to grant Extension of Assessment Request will be at the sole discretion of the Head of Department and no further negotiation will be entered into. Where decision made by the Head of Department is "DECLINE EXTENSION OF ASSESSMENT REQUEST" the assessment item must be submitted by the original due date in accordance with the assessment policy.
3 RE-ASSESSMENT BOOKING PROCEDURE All re-assessments are booked at Student Services reception. The Student must complete a RE-ASSESSMENT APPLICATION (GA028) for EACH re-assessment subject and submit to Student Services. Once the application is approved by Head of Department, the signed request authority will then be handed back to Student Services to formally complete the re-assessment booking. The Assessment date will be published online under "MY RESULT". The re-assessment cover sheet is printed by a student services assistant and provided to the Head of Department for preparation of the assessment task. Once completed the cover sheet is given to the assessing lecturer in time for the assessment task on the agreed / approved date.
This process ensures that the required facilities are available and the required products have been ordered for the re-assessment demonstration.
Please note: All practical cookery re-assessments may be conducted during the term break.
4 VERBALS Verbals must be completed within 15 days of the marketing date shown on the Feedback for Assessment sheet. It is the responsibility of the student to contact the lecturer and arrange a suitable time to conduct the verbal. Verbals not completed within the 15 day period will automatically be deemed a re-assessment. The re-assessment procedure as outline above will apply.
